City officials joined representatives of Home Depot USA for the August 27 groundbreaking for the company's Greenville store. Home Depot is the anchor for Greenville Commons, a 24-acre shopping center on the Interstate 30 south service road, east of Wesley Street. The 140,000 square foot Greenville store, including a 26,000 square foot garden center, is 10,000 square feet larger than the standard Home Depot home improvement center. The store held its opening dedication
ceremony on February 2, 2002.
Greenville Board of Development Executive Director Robert Winningham expects the Home Depot outlet to provide a significant boost to the local economy, hiring approximately 150 associates. The entire Greenville Commons development is expected to generate more than $1 million in annual sales.
Home Depot spokesperson Mandy Hilton cites the support of local officials in making the Greenville store a reality. She told the Greenville Herald Banner the company was pleased to "come into a city where the welcome mat has been rolled out."
City of Greenville staff, the City Council, the Planning and Zoning Commission, Turman Real Estate, the Texas Department of Transportation, and Sen. David Cain were all instrumental in helping the Board of Development attract Home Depot to Greenville.
The Atlanta based company, with 1,249 stores, is the world's largest home improvement retailer. In addition to Home Depot, plans for Greenville Commons include a Chili's restaurant and several additional retail outlets.
