GBOD Celebrates 84 Years in Economic Development

The Greenville Board of Development has had an economic development presence in the region since June 1941, when the City Council passed an ordinance to vote on approving a Charter amendment to create the Board of Development. Here is an excerpt from Charter Section 22:

“There is hereby created a Board of Development in the City of Greenville which shall devote its time and effort for the purpose of promoting the growth and development of the City of Greenville…”

In August 1941, the Council authorized the City Clerk to set up a separate account in the City’s books, to be known as the Board of Development Fund. At the same Council meeting, the Council authorized the first transfer of funds, $575.00, from the Public Utility Fund to BOD — the total net profits from the utility provider for the past month.

One of the first projects was to transfer $3,000 to the Airport Fund to purchase additional land that would be owned by the City of Greenville after the end of WWII.

Today, The Greenville Board of Development strives to live up to its 84-year reputation as responsible stewards of city funds, to grow business opportunities for residents of this region. GBOD has always been a close partner of existing businesses, and has done its best to make Greenville thrive.
